KD: The Devil Movie Review – Loud, Massy, and Full-On Retro Swag

So, I finally got around to checking out director Prem’s massive action drama, KD: The Devil. Not gonna lie, if you are a fan of high-octane masala entertainers where the hero has bindaas swagger, the villains are menacing, and the background score threatens to blow your speakers, this one is a total treat.

Set in the gritty 1970s, the film tries to recreate that classic retro underworld vibe. It’s loud, it’s bloody, and it definitely doesn’t take itself too seriously. Is it groundbreaking cinema? Absolutely not. But is it a fun time-pass watch? Oh, for sure.

The Plot: What’s the Story About?

The story takes us back to Bangalore in the early 1970s. We follow Kaali, a small-time criminal who is just trying to make his way through the rough streets. But as luck (or bad decisions) would have it, Kaali accidentally ends up crossing paths with some seriously dangerous underworld kingpins.

What starts as petty crime quickly escalates into a full-blown gang war. Suddenly, Kaali is no longer just a local thug; he is the target of every major gangster in town. The rest of the movie is basically him fighting his way out of this massive mess, leading to a lot of broken bones and dramatic slow-motion entries.

Cast & Crew: Who is Who?

  • Dhruva Sarja as Kaali (The man, the myth, the action machine)
  • Sanjay Dutt in a menacing, high-voltage role
  • Shilpa Shetty Kundra bringing some serious retro charm
  • Director: Prem, who clearly loves larger-than-life cinema

Our Review: Paisa Vasool or Just Loud Noise?

Let’s talk about the good stuff first. Dhruva Sarja is absolute fire on screen. The guy has a massive screen presence, and his action sequences are top-notch. Honestly, he carries the film on his shoulders. Director Prem knows exactly how to build up a hero’s entry, and he doesn’t hold back. Every time Dhruva walks in slow motion with the BGM blasting, you can’t help but enjoy the sheer audacity of it.

Sanjay Dutt is back doing what he does best—playing a terrifying bad guy. He brings that same raw menace we loved in KGF 2. Shilpa Shetty Kundra also looks great and adds a nice touch of class to the otherwise gritty and dusty setting.

Now, coming to the script. Tbh, the story is nothing we haven’t seen before. It is your standard “underdog rises in the criminal world” template. The second half kinda drags in a few places, and some of the emotional scenes feel a bit forced. If you are looking for deep, logical storytelling, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you just want to switch off your brain and enjoy some solid action, this is pure entertainment.

The visual grandeur and the cinematography deserve a special mention. The 1970s aesthetic is captured beautifully, even if it feels a bit stylized. The music and background score are loud—like, really loud—but they fit the chaotic energy of the film perfectly.
