But did you know there was a prequel? Yes, Cruel Intentions 2 is very much a thing, and it stars a super young Amy Adams way before she became a massive Hollywood darling. I recently rewatched this late-night classic, and not gonna lie, it’s such a nostalgic trip back to the era of trashy, high-society teen dramas.

The Storyline: Step-Sibling Rivalry at its Peak

The movie takes us back to the beginning, following a 16-year-old Sebastian Valmont (played by Robin Dunne), who is basically a magnet for trouble. After getting kicked out of yet another fancy private school, he packs his bags and heads to New York City to live with his dad and stepmother. Sebastian actually wants to turn over a new leaf and be a good guy for once, but his new stepsister Kathryn Merteuil (Amy Adams) has other plans.

Kathryn is manipulative, beautiful, and absolutely runs her elite school like a dictator in designer clothes. What follows is a classic game of mind games, bets, and seduction. Sebastian tries to play nice, but Kathryn is determined to bring out his dark side. Tbh, the plot is full of over-the-top melodrama, but that’s exactly what makes it such a fun time-pass watch.

Look, is this a cinematic masterpiece? Absolutely not. It actually started its life as a TV pilot called Manchester Prep. When the show got cancelled before even airing, they stitched the episodes together, added some steamy scenes, and released it as a movie. You can kinda feel that episodic structure while watching, but it honestly adds to the charm.

The best part? Seeing Amy Adams play a scheming, villainous high school queen bee. She totally carries the film with her bindaas attitude. Robin Dunne does a decent job as Sebastian, though he’s no Ryan Phillippe. If you love shows like Gossip Girl or Elite, this movie is basically the blueprint. It’s full on drama, slightly trashy, and perfect for a lazy weekend watch with some popcorn.
