Fired Up! (2009) Movie Review: A Hilariously Dumb Teen Comedy That Still Rules

Remember those late 2000s teen comedies that made absolutely no sense but were still somehow incredibly fun to watch? Fired Up! (2009) is exactly that kind of movie. It is goofy, completely unrealistic, and packed with fast-talking high schoolers who behave like 30-year-old stand-up comedians. The Storyline: Football Out, Cheerleading In

The plot is as ridiculous as it gets. Shawn (Nicholas D’Agosto) and Nick (Eric Christian Olsen) are the ultimate high school cool guys and stars of their school’s football team. But they are absolutely dreading the upcoming summer football camp. Why? Because it is hot, sweaty, and full of guys.

While looking at a flyer, they realize that the school’s cheerleading camp is happening at the exact same time, in the exact same location, and is packed with hundreds of girls. Naturally, they hatch a master plan to ditch football and join the cheer squad.

What starts as a sneaky mission to hit on girls quickly turns into something else. Shawn ends up falling hard for the head cheerleader, Carly (Sarah Roemer), who is super smart and sees right through their BS. Suddenly, the boys find themselves actually caring about the cheer routines and trying to help their team win the big championship. It is full-on drama mixed with some genuinely hilarious choreography.

Look, let’s be real. If you are looking for deep, intellectual cinema, please look elsewhere. This movie is pure, unadulterated time-pass. But what makes it work so well is the crazy chemistry between Nicholas D’Agosto and Eric Christian Olsen. Their bromance is the heart of the film. They bounce off each other so fast that you might miss half the jokes if you aren’t paying attention.

Not gonna lie, some of the jokes have aged a bit weirdly, which is typical for a 2009 comedy. But the sheer energy of the film keeps you hooked. Plus, the supporting cast is amazing—especially the camp counselor and the rival team leaders who are delightfully over-the-top.
