Balti Movie Review: A Decent Sports-Crime Time-Pass Watch

So I just finished watching Balti, the new sports-crime drama, and honestly? It is a bit of a mixed bag. If you love Kabaddi and don’t mind a healthy dose of local gangster drama, this might be a decent weekend watch. But don’t go in expecting some ground-breaking cinema, okay? It has its moments, but it also drags quite a bit.

What is the Story About?

The plot of Balti revolves around four local Kabaddi players who are actually pretty good at the game. But as fate would have it, their lives take a massive, messy U-turn when they get tangled up with a dangerous local gang.

The main lead, a star Kabaddi player, finds himself getting pulled deeper and deeper into the dark criminal underworld. It is basically a classic ‘good boys get stuck in a bad situation’ trope, mixing sports passion with raw street crime. Will they escape the gang wars or end up completely ruined? That is pretty much what the rest of the movie is about.

Honest Review: Hits and Misses

Let us talk about the good stuff first. The absolute highlight of the film has to be the music. Sai Abhayankar (who composed this before working on the Tamil movie Dude) has done a fantastic job. The background score really pumps up the adrenaline during the matches and action scenes. Speaking of action, the fight sequences and Kabaddi matches are choreographed quite well—definitely kept me awake.

Another surprising element was Alphonse Puthren. His performance was next-level and easily one of the best parts of the movie. He brought a lot of energy to his scenes.

But not gonna lie, the movie has some major flaws. The acting from the main lead Shane Nigam felt weirdly off-track this time, which is disappointing because he is usually a solid actor. Same goes for Selvarangam—his performance just did not land well. The pacing also gets sluggish in the second half, making it feel like a bit of a stretch.

The Verdict

Is it an absolute must-watch? Nah, not really. But is it a decent, one-time-watch if you are bored on a Sunday afternoon? Yeah, sure. It is an average sports-masala entertainer that could have been much better with tighter editing and stronger performances from the leads. Tbh, it is just a decent time-pass watch.
